The Philippines, like all the other 196 countries in the world, is faced with the COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease) crisis which cripples the operations of the government, as well as the private and business sector. Families are ordered to stay home to prevent the spread of the virus thus, arrest the rising cases of people afflicted with the disease. Presently, most cities and provinces have released memorandums ordering their citizens to settle in their homes and go out only if necessary to avoid contact transmission..

With the current situation, funny memes and other remarks circulate social networking sites about an expected surge in the country’s population after nine months due to the home quarantine state of Filipino families. Couples have so much time but with little alternative activities while they stay in their homes. POPCOM X reminds couples to exercise responsible parenthood and family planning to prevent unplanned pregnancies while staying home.

POPCOM Executive Director, Usec. Juan Antonio A. Perez, III, urged families to consider family planning while they stay at home during this health crisis.

Usec. Perez added that continuing the family planning program is vital during this health emergency. If the program ceases, the health system will once again be burdened by the increase in unplanned pregnancies among women, including adolescent girls.

In spite of the COVID-19 scare, POPCOM X assures the public that close coordination with the local government unitsis maintained to ensure that couples needing family planning services will be accommodated.
