The Commission on Population and Development Region X conducted an orientation on Gender Sensitivity Training (GST) for its job order staff last January 23, 2020.
This is a continuous activity of POPCOM X as part of the agency’s gender and development program focused on discussing thoroughly gender sensitivity concepts, gender-based issues, re-writing gender scripts, and how all these areas of concern relate to violence against women and children (VAWC).
Various activities such as film showing, group discussion, workshop, and role-play were integrated into the orientation module to deepen the staff’s understanding of the different gender issues.
In his speech during the activity, Assistant Regional Director Neil Aldrin G. Omega emphasized the importance of gender and development in creating harmony among family members especially to parents when it comes to putting tasks and responsibility at home.
He furthered by saying that gender sensitivity plays a significant role in family relationships and dynamics be at home or in the workplace. Hence, there has to be a clear understanding among individuals on the interplay of socio-cultural issues on gender and rewriting some gender roles that impede the development of a person.
During the presentation, Mr. Ramie Lumasag showed a video depicting the unjust treatment among women. He explained that women should not be viewed inferiorly but should be treated equally with men.
In the same training, there was also a thorough discussion about fertility awareness to increase the participants’ knowledge about responsible parenthood and reproductive health.
