The Commission on Population and Development Region X continues to supply family planning (FP) commodities such as condom, pills, and injectibles to the different health centers in Cagayan de Oro City amidst existing general community quarantine due to COVID-19.
POPCOM X Regional Director Jeremias Gupit reported that the restocking of FP commodities to date has reached 14 barangays which include – Kauswagan, Bayabas, Bonbon, Puntod, Macabalan, Gusa, Camaman-an, Macasandig, Carmen (Sitio Macanhan), Lumbia, Pagalungan, Pigsag-an, Tumpagon, and Tuburan. A total of 1,850 cycles of pills, 425 vials of injectibles (DMPA), and 444 pieces of condoms have been provided to the different health centers in the city.
The resupplying of FP commodities to rural health units (RHU) has reached as far as Oroquieta City with 13,000 cycles of pills, and in Baliangao, Misamis Oriental with 800 vials of injectible (DMPA) and 50 pieces of condoms provided.
Director Gupit pointed out that the restocking in the different provinces is “logistically challenging” since general community quarantine (GCQ) is being implemented and transportation of non-essential commodities was temporarily suspended. However, POPCOM X has coordinated with the different LGUs that it will resupply immediately once GCQ is lifted by the LGU.
In an interview, Director Gupit further said that, “stocks of our commodities in POPCOM regional office and Department of Health Region X are sufficient as of now but this could run low in the next few weeks especially that FP supplies are to be shipped from Manila where transportation systems are temporarily suspended due to extended enhanced community quarantine.”
Director Gupit also emphasized that despite the potential shortage of FP commodities in the region, the office has created a mechanism to redistribute the commodities from RHUs or health centers where stocks are high to other facilities with lower supplies. Through this, commodities are readily available for clients in the different localities of the region.
On the other hand, POPCOM regional FP clinic in Cagayan de Oro City is open for consultation and services from Mondays-Fridays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All FP services are free and adequately provided by trained nurses and midwives of POPCOM X.
