The Commission on Population and Development-Region X (POPCOM X) has intensified the provision of family planning (FP) services right at the doorstep of eligible clients to avert a possible baby boom that would happen once the pandemic is over.
Mr. Neil Aldrin G. Omega, Acting Regional Director of POPCOM X said “POPCOM X is working with private companies in the region to ensure that Responsible Parenthood and Family Planning (RPFP) information and services are directly provided to employees of the said companies.”
Rose, a lady guard in one of the big department stores in the city is among the many clients who have benefited from this partnership. Fearing that she might have an unplanned pregnancy, she asked their company nurse how she could avail of the free commodity and service considering that the nature of her work prohibits her to visit their health center. With the partnership in place and upon the request of their company nurse, POPCOM X brought and provided the service in the company where she worked.
“I don’t want to get pregnant yet at this time of the pandemic. My husband wants to have another child now, but I feel unprepared yet to have another one. We are still struggling economically and even emotionally for safety and protection in this health crisis”, Ms. Rose said during the interview.
Citing reports from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), Director Omega said the region’s average number of babies born annually is about 97,000 in the last three (3) years up to 2019. With the pandemic, it is expected that the number of babies born will increase to 116,400. This is attributed to the lockdowns implemented during quarantines where the number of women going to health centers to get their FP supplies had declined.
