In the wake of modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) in Cagayan de Oro City, the Commission on Population and Development – Region X (POPCOM X) launches its house-to-house delivery of family planning (FP) services to ensure unimpeded access to reproductive health needs of couples and individuals.
It can be noted that President Rodrigo Duterte has placed CDO under MECQ status effective June 1 to June 15, 2021 due to the surge of COVID-19 infections.
For the first two (2) weeks of the grassroots mobilization, POPCOM X recorded a total of twenty-three (23) women of reproductive age (WRA) from the different barangays in CDO who have successfully received progestin-only subdermal implant (PSI).
With strict compliance to health protocols, POPCOM service providers are visiting communities to provide FP information and services directly to clients at the comfort of their homes.
The data published by the University of Philippines Population Institute (UPPI) and the United Nations Population Fund in 2020 estimated that nearly 2 million Filipino women of reproductive age, or those between 15 to 49 years old, will get pregnant on the same year, leading to an additional 214,000 unplanned births. It is also believed that 10 percent of the births will be among women below 20 years of age, also with an additional 5,000 pregnancies.
Following this alarming data on unplanned pregnancy, POPCOM X continues to innovate to make FP services accessible to clients even in the period of the pandemic and strict quarantine measures.
Complementing the home service initiative is the continuous operation of the POPCOM Family Planning Wellness Clinic which caters an average of 10 clients per day. The FP clinic of POPCOM is located at J.V. Seriñast., Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City.
To schedule an appointment in the clinic or home service, clients may contact the POPCOM Helpline through (0909) 914 9735 or (0997) 128 1482.
