In response to the call of President Rodrigo Duterte to strengthen the Family Planning (FP) program, an outreach on Progestin-Only Subdermal Implant (PSI) was held in Barangay Macanhan Health Center, Cagayan de Oro City on August 20, 2019.

The outreach was spearheaded by POPCOM Demand Generation Coordinator Ms. Sherlyn Subrado alongside RPFP District Coordinators Ms. Pretchelle Carumba and Ms. Shynn Rose Pastrana in coordination with the Barangay Health Workers (BHW) of Macanhan.

Mothers who availed the service underwent an interview and a brief orientation which explained the significance of FP and its components in achieving a quality life for the family.

“Nalipay kaayo ko nga niabot ni nga programa sa POPCOM diri sa among barangay. Tungod ani nga method, matagaan na nako ug oras akong duha ka anak kay kampatante ko nga dili pa sila masundan…libre pa gyud ni nga ginahatag sa gobyerno. Ikaduha, mapa-eskwela nako sila ug maayo kay sila raman duha. Sa kalisod sa panahon ug mahal ang panaliton, importante nga plando ang pamilya”, said Dremilyn Palma, 25 years old and a mother of two children.

“I am glad that this [FP] program has reached our barangay. Through this method [PSI], I will be able to give time to my children because I am confident that I won’t be pregnant anytime soon. This service from the government is free. Also, I will be able to send my children to school and attend to their needs properly. In the present time wherein commodities are expensive, it is best to make a plan for the family.”

Palma further narrates that she plans to enroll her husband in KATROPA sessions in order to provide adequate information on responsible parenting. KATROPA is a training activity that aims to involve men in promoting maternal health thereby becoming FP advocates themselves.

As POPCOM 10 heeds to Executive Order No. 12 of President Duterte, the office, and other related departments will continue to conduct series of programs that will help in the attainment of “zero unmet need for modern family planning” in the region and entire country. Hence, augmented facilities are provided at the local levels in order to persuade residents to avail.

Modern family planning services are available in barangay health centers and POPCOM regional office. Clients may visit on Mondays to Fridays from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM
